I have never been a fan of”goals”
Goal setting workshops and all that jazz.
Seems like a ton of people work on that stuff but never make much progress.
Me…I don’t have time to play games.
So a long time ago I trained myself to think in OUTCOMES.
Every activity I enter into I ask myself one simple question…
“What is my DESIRED OUTCOME for this project, or meeting, or relationship etc?
You see…if you focus on OUTCOMES…not goals and not the “how tos” you rarely get caught up in junk as you eye is ON THE BALL instead of on the obstacles that you will come across on the way to accomplishing what you set out to do.
Another great think about thinking in OUTCOMES is that you free up your mind to get creative in “getting er done”
One more magic tip:
At he end of the day…ask yourself…
Did I make PROGRESS today?
If so…wonderful.
But if not…
By virtue of asking the question your MIND will pull you closer to the result you want by giving you ideas that you can only access via this simple daily exercise.
So I say…
Ditch Your Goals and swap them out for some great OUTCOMES and you will make progress like never before!

  1. Hi Diane,
I like the way you look at things. Goal setting is hard and one thing that I have tried to focus on, however I do like this new perspective of taking your focus off of doing things to getting it done. Thanks so much for giving us your view!

  2. That makes a lot of sense. I also did a video on are you going to event to be a
Builder or just social aspect. I hear a lot specially since the live the dream is coming up
About being at events . And like you said in your blog what is your desired outcome for doing anything.

    1. Yup..people spend a lot of money getting to events and never think to set an actual outcome for it.
      Kooky if you ask me!

As with most all of the advice I have received from the Divine Miss ‘H’, this one is a keeper. When we think ‘outcomes’ our minds tune in to the positive energy of why the activity is of benefit. To often, in my opinion, goals are an offshoot of the Corporate Culture to ‘achieve’ phony accountability. Outcomes make much more sense from an entrepreneurial business building perspective. At least that’s my opinion. Thanks, Diane, for being the beacon of sanity you are…

    1. That’s really it Pete.
All about positive energy and generating more and more of it.

  4. Powerful..I totally agree that goals can also be see as obstacles that can deter people from action, hence the reason for some that goal setting can be counter productive. Having well formed outcomes I believe is an NLP strategy that I’ve read about but never grasped the WHY it’s powerful but having explained it the way you have, the penny has finally dropped.
    Thanks Diane.

    1. Is it an NLP concept? I have never really studies NLP. For me it was just common sense to think about what I want to occur with each activity and put all the focus there readjusting the course constantly as opposed to trying to make an all encompassing goal that if I missed would cause me to feel bad.
I always focus on finding ways to feel GOOD!

  5. “A rose is a rose…”
An Outcome by any other name is a Goal, Intention, Result…
They’re all just words that essentially mean the same thing.
Diane hit on the key when she said trying to hit goals makes her feel BAD, while focusing on outcomes makes her FEEL GOOD.
We all avoid pain and seek pleasure.
Use whichever word makes you feel good. You’ll get better results.

    1. Doug..I believe that goals and the activity of goal setting as most teach it is definitively different that choosing an outcome before one enters and activity.
In my opinion they are far from the same thing.
