I had no sales training or background when I began my business
and when I listened to recruiting training from top leaders their
approaches always felt so unnatural to me so I looked to real
main street businesses as my inspiration and just behaved like
the store keepers of the little stores my family frequented in
New York City when I was a kid.
1)I got to know everyone in the neighborhood..was friendly and said hi…
2)I REALLY got to know my customers and carried products that they WANTED
3) I became very knowledgeable about the products I carry
and
4)I sent them notes now and again to let them know what new products I had in for them.
Fast forward 13 years and that is all still do today.
I just have the internet to help me along…but the premise is still just Main Street USA all the way.
Simple common sense and caring for people.
Not a slick closing line in my repertoire.
It’s really not hard….businesses have been doing this for hundreds of years.
Think Little House On The Prairie…
Olsen’s Mercantile.
THIS is my model.
Know everyone…
Treat everyone great…
When folks stop by tell em a story and make em giggle…
Carry stuff they want and need to buy
Let em know what you have that’s new and interesting or any
specials you have going on.
That’s pretty much it.
Slick eh???

Thanks Diane,
You made me think of our shopping trips as a kid…all the merchants seemed to know my folks by name…rare these days!
